Stop signs to replace yield signs in select locations in St. Marys’ east ward

The signs they are a-changin’.
Starting on August 5, 2022, stop signs will replace yield signs in several locations throughout St. Marys’ east ward. The decision to change the signs was part of an amendment to the Town’s Traffic, Parking and Boulevard Maintenance By-law, which Council approved in 2021. The amendment will also see the intersection of Waterloo St. S and Elgin St. E become a four-way stop.
In some cases, stop signs are being added to accommodate the installation of sidewalks, which will improve pedestrian linkages and overall safety. Stop signs are also being added in areas that have seen an increase in daily traffic levels, or where safety concerns have been observed by the public, Town staff, and the Community Policing Advisory Committee.
The changes from yield signs to stop signs will be made in three phases. A highly visible warning sign will be added to the new stop signs for 30 days to alert motorists to the change. Stop bars will also be painted on the pavement as an additional visual cue. Police will be active in each area following installation to ensure drivers are abiding by the new signage.
