The rumours were true, and a new healthy food alternative has officially opened in downtown St. Marys! You can imagine my excitement when I heard they offered fresh sushi, bowls and salads.
Food Station 39 opened it's doors in the former location of Kitchen Smidgen bakery within the last week and after an influx of messages asking me if I had heard about it, I absolutely had to check it out for myself as a sushi lover and former employee of a prestigious sushi restaurant in Windsor.
The establishment itself is of course on the smaller scale but that adds to the quality of the food prepared and the intimacy of the service. They offer made to order bowls, salads, as well as pre-made sushi and bowls featured in their two fridges present in the store. Options change both daily and weekly, so there is always a lot of selection. On the day I went, I chose a dynamite maki (typically tempura shrimp, avocado and cucumber) as well as the salmon platter (which came with nigiri salmon and a salmon maki) and the satay peanut bowl with chicken added. These were more than sufficient in feeding two people. Bowls can be made to be vegan and gluten free which is also a bonus! There were three weekly healthy bowls featured, and four salads; all described in detail.
My overall impression was everything was extremely fresh, made in a timely manner, and prepared with care. The service was friendly and fast, and it is so refreshing to have more options (especially healthy offerings) we can choose from in our downtown core. Things are looking up for the Stonetown on the food front in our downtown again!
Food Station 39 is on social media at Instagram food_station39, with a Facebook page soon to follow. The store is located at 36 Water Street South and their current hours are 12-5 pm Monday to Friday.
