It was a close, fast-paced and hard-checking game from start to finish Sunday morning at the PRC.
In a contest that could have gone either way, Stingers went home with a 3-2 mini-league ringette victory over the St. Marys U19 Blue.
After Melanie Martin gave Snipers an early 1-0 advantage, Mitchell scored twice in the final three minutes of the first half to grab the lead. In the first minute of the second half, Stingers connected again to boost their lead to 3-1.
Midway through the period, Jill Unich pulled St. Marys to within a goal, but the home team could get no closer. Jaydn DeBoer was stopped twice, and Martin had a good chance in the final minute, but was denied by the Mitchell goaltender.
Both sides had two penalty shots following regulation time, but the goalies shut the door on all four attempts.
Kaitie Gratton and Alia Linton earned assists for the Sheri Unich’s Snipers, and goalkeeper Abby Cunningham turned in a solid effort throughout.
Henderson sparks U14 Green
In another mini-league game Sunday morning, Charlee Henderson fired five first-half goals to pace the U14 Green Snipers to an 8-7 win over Mitchell.
Green led 6-3 at the halfway mark.
Kylie Robertson, Payton Blight and Cameron Lobb scored the singles for St. Marys, while Ella Brodhagen collected four goals for the visiting Stingers.
The two teams combined for 10 penalties.
High-scoring U10 game
The two St. Marys U10 teams also squared off on Sunday morning. The Green team emerged with a high-scoring 9-7 decision over the Blue squad after the two sides were deadlocked 5-5 after the first half.
Lily Murphy clicked for three goals for Green, while teammates Lily Forbes and Lillian Johnston netted two apiece. Ava Bastien and Olivia Hendriks helped out with two assists each.
Isla Ritchie had a hat trick for Blue, with Kyla Graham and Peyton Van Straten scoring two apiece. Ainsley King was the playmaker with three assists, with Mealle Hachler contributing two more.
In a U16 mini-league game Sunday, the Exeter-Seaforth Explosion defeated the Green Snipers 6-4.
It was 4-3 for the Explosion heading into the second half. Jenna Hutton, Anaya Larmer, Jorja Linton and Jessica Burlingham scored for St. Marys.
In a U10 game back on Nov. 3, the St. Marys Blue team battled back to gain an 8-8 tie with Mitchell at the PRC.
Kyla Graham had three goals for the Snipers, with Lily Murphy and Isabella Fluttert adding two apiece. Lillian Johnston chipped in a goal and was also the playmaker with three assists.
The visiting Stingers held a 4-3 lead after the first half of play.
