Council makes decision Tuesday morning

The second ice pad at the Pyramid Recreation Centre will open Thursday, Oct. 29.
Town council made the decision on Tuesday morning of this week.
“One of the first and foremost things is safety,” Mayor Al Strathdee told the Independent. “We feel with two ice pads, we can stagger usage and allow people more space.
“We won’t have the crossover in terms of gatherings during ice rentals. There will be a 35-minute span between use. When people are on the ice, people will be leaving and vice-versa. Part of it is a safety factor. We feel we can run the facility safely that way. It will be better for our users.”
Secondly, Strathdee said necessity and demand (for ice) were other reasons in council’s decision.
“We want to provide it, first and foremost, for St. Marys residents,” he said. “We want to provide that because in these times people are looking for things to do. People are trying to stay busy and stay healthy, and by opening the second pad we can provide what groups are asking for.”
An ice users meeting will be held this Thursday, Oct. 22, the mayor noted.
