Donating $1 for every download this week
By Stewart Grant
Chris Swarthout’s podcast is branching out in more ways than one these days.
The Half Cut Podcast, which features the St. Marys-based comedian along with friends Anthony Shuglo from Windsor and Patrick Clancy from Meaford, has now recorded 13 episodes and has gradually increased its following. And this week, they are hoping to add additional listeners and support a great cause at the same time.
In the most recent episode of the podcast, the trio interviewed Brent Foley, who is President this year of the Kinsmen Club of St. Marys. For each download of the episode, the Half Cut Podcast will be donating $1 (up to a maximum of $1,000) towards Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Since 1964, Kin members across Canada have raised more than $47.6 million for cystic fibrosis research and patient care. Along the way, an extra year of life for a CF child has been earned for almost every year of Kin support. Back in 1964, children with the disease were not expected to live past the age of four; today, children and young adults with cystic fibrosis are often living into their mid-50s and beyond (source: kincanada.ca/cystic-fibrosis).
“We’ve been doing the show via Sykpe since COVID started,” Swarthout told the Independent. “We have listeners in the UK, Australia, France, USA, and all over Canada. It’s a mix of people locally, but we don’t know anyone around the world who’s listening, so that’s kinda neat.”
Each week, the three friends “chat about news, pop culture, sports and daily shenanigans” and include an interview segment with a special guest. Some of the recent interviewees have been Emm Gryner, Darcy John, and Liane Gregory Sterritt.
Next week, I’ll be a guest of the podcast to discuss the state of the newspaper industry and tell some inside stories about life at the St. Marys Independent. Downloads of this episode, which should be available by this coming Sunday, also contribute to the CF fundraising effort.
The Half Cut podcast is available for download or streaming on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, and other platforms. You can also follow the guys on Facebook and Instagram.
