Let’s keep the PRC rink busy throughout April
By Stewart Grant
Although the minor hockey season generally wraps up in March, the Pyramid Recreation Centre will continue to operate an ice rink through to April 26 before closing for the summer.
This is a noteworthy point. Many rinks suspend operations for the season following the end of March, so we are fortunate to have the extra four weeks to skate here in town. However, this is not guaranteed to happen every April, unless there is a clear expectation that keeping the ice open will not be cost-prohibitive. In short, let’s use this ice.
For the Town of St. Marys, who recently completed a comprehensive costing study of various aspects of its operations, the “April decision” was not an easy one, particularly for the two weeks that follow the Easter weekend No Body Contact tournament being held April 9-11. The costing study revealed that the approximate break-even point for the Town is 30 hours of ice time per week.
As a member of the St. Marys Lincolns’ executive, I’m particularly interested in seeing April ice be financially viable for the town. This year, the Lincolns Prospect Camp is being held this year April 24-26 (to register, visit www.playforlincolns.com). For our hockey club, it’s hugely important for our future player recruitment to be able to host the annual prospect camp in town, and the event also helps raise funds for the operation of the club.
The Lincolns aren’t the only organization that is happy to see the ice remain at the PRC in April. The Stratford Silver Knights are also taking advantage of the extra April ice time, committing to approximately 15 hours.
The Town of St. Marys held a meeting last month with local organizations who reserve large blocks of ice during the season, and as a result, collectively enough bookings have taken place to ensure that the Town will meet its 30-hours-per-week break-even threshold.
We are fortunate to have such a quality facility in St. Marys and I’d like to use this article to promote April ice usage and help the Town of St. Marys realize a strong return on investment for keeping the ice in through to April 26. My hope is that this may demonstrate that April ice will be viable in future years so that events such as the Lincolns Spring Camp and the annual NBC tournament (an important fundraiser for St. Marys Minor Hockey) can continue to be scheduled.
