Members pick up 10 medals in Provincial tournament in Burlington

BURLINGTON – It was a great start to the 2020 tournament season for the Stonetown Karate Centre here Saturday, Feb. 29 at the Haber Recreation Centre.
SKC members picked up one first, eight seconds and one third in the Ontario Provincial martial arts championships.
Taking the first-place medal was Darren Campbell, who topped the field in 35-and-over men’s advance sparring.
Collecting three silver medals was Jalyne Lorentz, competing in the 13-14 Jr. Black Belt division. She was second in Creative Weapons, Traditional Kata (forms) and Creative Kata.
Isabelle Lariviere had two second-place finishes in the 13-14 Intermediate division, winning silver in sparring and kata. Fox Houston also claimed two silver medals, finishing second in 9-10 advanced sparring and kata.
Rounding out the local competitors were Nathan Campbell, who was second in 7-8 advanced sparring, while Marieke van Lierop placed third in the 11-12 Novice kata division. It’s the first-ever tournament that van Lierop has competed in.
“We’ve been training hard for the WKC Provincial qualifiers in April,” SKC sensei Jeremy Lorentz said. “Our members continue to strive to be the best they can be, and we are looking forward to another amazing tournament year.”
