The Thames River Paddling Club is once again hosting the annual Wildwood Dragon Boat Challenge on beautiful Wildwood Lake on Sunday, May 24, the weekend after the Victoria Day.
If you have ever wanted to experience the thrill of flying through the water in a dragon boat, this is your opportunity! The Challenge is looking to grow and, as a community endeavour, are looking for community and business teams to participate in this one-day event about fun, exercise, and friendly competition. Several local businesses are currently working on building their teams or sponsoring the event. Register a team or as an individual and you will be supporting your community at the same time.
A dragon boat holds 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a steersperson to get you to the finish line. Dragon boating offers the benefits of physical fitness by strengthening your upper body and core and is a vigorous workout, but also is a sport for a person of any size, physical fitness or skill level. Socially, it is a team sport and promotes trust and friendship during practices and competitions.
Races of 300m, 100m Knock-out & 1000m Flag Catching will be held for two divisions: Youth (ages 11-18) and Adult. Additional challenge cups will be awarded for specific categories based on demand such as: Health Care, Manufacturing, or Service Group. The top team in the Youth and Adult divisions will win free entry to the Challenge in 2021.
Practices are available at Wildwood in the two weeks leading up to the event as well as limited practice on the morning of the Challenge. Everything is provided including coaching, paddles, and life jackets. Register early to receive early-bird discounts.
The day will be spectacular for both participants and spectators so bring your whole family! There will be games for all ages and crafts for the kids. Enjoy a BBQ lunch, the beach, and the park while cheering on your team with an excellent view of the races.
