Local St Marys couple Catherine and Chris Cumming recently completed one of the world’s most unique adventures, America’s Great Loop, aboard their 44 foot Manta power catamaran Two Loons.
In completing the Great Loop, the couple circumnavigated the eastern part of the U.S. by cruising across Florida on the Okeechobee Waterway, up the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, up the Hudson River, through the New York State Canals, across the Great Lakes, down the inland river system, and across the Gulf of Mexico to “cross their wake” in Cortez Florida on November 19th. Two Loons completed her 5,185 mile (8,345 km) Loop in 179 days over 93 travel days, visiting 19 U.S. states and passing through 65 locks.
Approximately 100 boats complete the Great Loop each year, making it a feat more unique than swimming the English Channel or Climbing Mount Everest. Throughout this trip of a lifetime, they relied on America’s Great Loop Cruisers’ Association (AGLCA) to provide them with information and assistance vital to the successful completion of their journey. By completing the Loop, the Cummings are entitled to fly the gold burgee of the AGLCA and are recognised as “Gold Loopers”.
This is what they said about their adventure: “As so many have learned before us, it is the people you meet along the way that truly make the Great Loop the fantastic experience it is. We’ve been so fortunate to have met so many awesome folks in our travels – many of whom will remain lifelong friends.”
Dedicated to living life to its fullest, the Cummings retired, sold their belongings, moved aboard their boat full time and set off to explore the world in November 2018. Over the past year they’ve journeyed more than 6,590 miles (10,600 km) through the Bahamas and around America’s Great Loop. Their continuing adventures in 2020 will see Two Loons return to the Bahamas briefly before continuing south through the Caribbean islands to reach Grenada by July.
The Cummings are active in sharing photos and video of their cruising experiences with friends and family on Facebook and Instagram as TwoLoonsCruising, and maintain an online map of their travels at: http://bit.ly/37n3TXJ
