DCVI Junior boys defeat their St. Mikes counterparts 46-41 last Wednesday

It appeared to be anybody’s game going into the fourth quarter last Wednesday afternoon at DCVI.
In a close, hard-fought battle to that point, Stratford St. Michael Warriors held a slim 35-33 lead over the host St. Marys Salukis going into the final eight minutes. However, Warriors dominated the quarter, out-scoring Salukis 14-5, and claiming a 49-38 Huron-Perth Conference Senior boys basketball victory.
It was the H-P season opener for both teams.
“I thought we executed offensively a little bit better in the fourth quarter,” St. Mikes coach Steve Goforth said. “We had struggled early, and we got the ball where we wanted it a little more in the fourth. St. Marys was in foul trouble, which helped us a little bit, too.
“It was our first game of the year, without many practices. We knew we were going to have to come in here and grind one out today.”
Salukis held a 12-11 lead after the first quarter, with Sam Watt and guard Jack Thorup both hitting three-point buckets for St. Marys. The game remained very close in the second quarter and the teams went to the half-time break deadlocked 23-23. Caleb MacDonald nailed a three-pointer for Salukis late in the second period.
Two three-pointers by Thorup in the third quarter helped keep DCVI within striking distance. However, Warriors took control by out-scoring Salukis 8-2 in the early stages of the fourth period.
“Emotions got a hold of us a couple of times late in the game, and that emotion caused them to foul,” St. Marys coach Ian Moore said. “That hurt us a little bit. Our defence was good, but we didn’t play with the control on offence in the second half like we did in the first half. We had more turnovers in the second half.
“But it was a good close game. That’s the first time we’ve had that close of a game against St. Mikes. If we play with a little more composure, both offensively and defensively, we’ll be okay.”
St. Mikes centre Kaden Eybergen led all scorers with 19 points. Wensley Bosse added 11 points and Tom Reidy nine more for the visitors.
Thorup led Salukis with 16 points, including three, three-point baskets. Watt added seven points, MacDonald five, while Kevin Fink and Nolan Shackleton both contributed four points.
Junior Salukis beat Warriors
In the H-P Junior boys game that followed, Salukis defeated their St. Mikes counterparts 46-41.
DCVI coach Ben Chalupka said Ben Richardson, Mason Boonstra, Carter McDougall and Zach Rooney were the top scorers for the St. Marys Juniors.
