For the third straight year, St. Marys is helping lead our country with Giving Tuesday – the global movement that encourages giving back to local communities. Spearheaded by an eight member committee of St. Marys business owners, teachers and volunteers, Town engagement has again been significantly elevated for the upcoming December 3rd day of outreach. As of press time, 70 combined local businesses, organizations, service clubs, churches and all schools are actively participating in Giving Tuesday 2019 with personally chosen community support initiatives. Their diversity of giving includes: food, clothing and toy collections; donating products or portions of sales on December 3rd to local charities or not-for-profit organizations; or performing simple acts of kindness to others that day. A full list of local participants and their respective planned giving is available on Facebook at St. Marys Giving Tuesday as well as on Instagram at stmarysgives. Interested parties are still welcome to register online at givingtuesday.ca and area residents are definitely invited to help by supporting associated activities.
Recognizing the Town’s incredible collective response, Giving Tuesday Canada event organizers recently awarded St. Marys one of only ten kits of distinction distributed amongst its 40 engaged communities in 2019. The special kit features a branded flag – coincidentally suggested by St. Marys’ leaders to national organizers. An official Giving Tuesday flag raising ceremony involving students and teachers from Holy Name of Mary Catholic School and Little Falls Public School will take place at St. Marys Town Hall on November 27th at 10:30 a.m.
Free Giving Tuesday offerings on December 3rd include: a community dinner at St. Marys United Church from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. hosted by congregation members and volunteers (food donated by Delmar Foods); a DCVI student door-to-door canned food drive from 6-8 p.m.; plus an engaging hour-long event with accomplished local musician, Emm Gryner, at St. Marys Town Hall Auditorium from 7-8 p.m with doors opening at 6:30. (sponsored by Andrew Hodges Funeral Home). Voluntary donations and baked good proceeds from her event will help the United Way of Perth-Huron’s ‘Nourish’ program. Please note, complimentary tickets for Emm Gryner must be obtained online in advance at www.eventbrite.ca.
