MISSISSAUGA – It was quite a day for Stonetown Karate Centre members, especially Jalyne Lorentz, here Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Samurai Classic Ontario Open martial arts championships.
The event was held at Mentor College.
Competing in the Junior Black Belt division, Lorentz finished first in traditional weapons and traditional kata (forms). She also placed second in creative weapons, creative forms and point sparring.
Lorentz then capped a memorable day by claiming the title of overall Grand Champion in the Jr. Black Belt division. “This division takes the first-place winners from all the Jr. Black Belt divisions (forms and weapons) and they face off to see who is the overall Grand Champion,” Stonetown Karate Sensei Jeremy Lorentz explained.
Two other SKC members picked up silver medals. Isabelle Lariviere took second place in point sparring in the 13-14 Intermediate division, and Fox Houston placed second in forms in the 7-8 Intermediate division.
Finley Houston was fifth in kata in the 11-12 Intermediate division.
Note: Jalyne Lorentz, along with adult members Lisa Sheldon and Darren Campbell, will represent the Stonetown Karate Centre and compete for Team Canada at the WKC World karate event in Niagara Falls, N.Y. early next month.
