Town Council has approved an electronic vehicle charging station to be installed at the VIA Station. In a very detailed report, Kelly Deeks-Johnson, Economic Development manager for the Town, asked that the Town approve the installation of an EVC styation and fund the project through a variance in the 2019 budget or through inclusion in the 2020 budget. Deeks-Johnson told Council that the project was brought forward by Chris West on behalf of All Aboard St. Marys, several years ago when he and Mayor Al Strathdee met with then VIA President Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, at the VIA office in Toronto. It was at this meeting that a charging station was requested and a commitment to install was made by the VIA President. There was no cost breakdown although Chris West has noted that the commitment at the time was that there would be no cost to the Town. The project sat on hold until it was passed on to the present Economic Development manager. At present VIA has completed all the necessary work to tender for the installation and a local contractor, Forman Electric. Has been selected to do the installation in the amount of $13,127, which will be paid for by the Town. Deeks-Johnson told Council that there is another charging station located at Westover, but this is only for Tesla vehicles. Council approved the latest plan for installation and All Aboard. VIA and the Town are all in favour of the plan.
