A charming love story, magical illusions and memorable music opens the St. Marys Community Players 2019-2020 season with the musical, The Fantasticks by Tom Jones, book and lyrics, and Harvey Schmidt, music.
The show opens Friday, October 25, with a preview performance on Thursday, October 24 and closing on Sunday, November 3 after 8 performances. Directed by Christin Bossenberry with musical direction by Marque Smith, The Fantasticks is a wondrous love story filled with music and moonlight, which features a lush score and such timeless melodies as “Try To Remember,” “Soon It’s Gonna Rain,” and “They Were You.”
“The Fantasticks is the world’s longest running musical. Let that just sink in a moment,” says director Christin Bossenberry. “There are no fancy backdrops, or smoke machines. No crazy costume changes or lines of chorus girls. The Fantasticks doesn’t need any of that. The Fantasticks thrives on its simplicity. Eight characters, a piano score, and a healthy dose of confetti.”
The musical originally appeared as a one-act musical at Barnard College in 1959. The fully developed twoact version began its off-Broadway run in May 1960 at the Sullivan Street Playhouse, where it ran for a record-breaking 42 years until January 2002.
The design and creative team includes Don Wells, Set Design and Master Carpenter; Ray Doerksen, Props and Set Decoration; Gary Austin and Alan Grogan, Lighting Design; Janis Fread, Costumes; Marie Stevens, Producer; and Amie Rankin, Stage Manager.
The Fantasticks, narrated by the mystical and gallant El Gallo, is a timeless story focusing on two young lovers, their meddling parents and the journey we all must take through the highs of adolescent passions, the agonies of heartbreak and the hurts of betrayal…to discover how to truly love.
“SMCP is thrilled to be producing this gorgeous show—full of hilarious antics, familiar songs, and a lovely moral that resonates with all ages. We hope that people who haven’t seen The Fantasticks will come to see our production, and parents will share this classic piece with their children,” enthuses the show’s producer, Marie Stevens.
The cast includes Landon Hoare as El Gallo; Sydney Harvey as Luisa; Daniel Kennedy as Matt ; Shawn Harvey as Hucklebee; Greg George as Bellomy; John Allen as Henry; Leasa Barclay as Mortimer and Mia Harvey as The Mute.
