The DCVI field hockey team has started their Huron-Perth season with a 2-2 record. Salukis began their season with a pair of victories at home on Sept. 18.
In their opening game against Listowel, the team dominated play but struggled to find the back of the net. The lone goal of the 1-0 win over the Lightning was scored by Emily Shrubsole.
In the second game against Clinton St. Anne’s, the team came out strong. Katie Brine opened the scoring with her first of two for the Salukis. Megan Morning added two more goals and Jaci Michell one as St. Marys blanked the Eagles 5-0.
Kayley Thompson earned both shutouts on the day.
In the second week of H-P League action, the field hockey Salukis travelled to Exeter South Huron to battle the top two teams in the league. Despite losing both matches 5-0 (to first-place Goderich Vikings and the host Panthers), the team showed perseverance against two much more experienced schools, DCVI coach Jessica Chateauvert reported.
Kayley Thompson and Matt Luyten shared goaltending duties and faced many shots. Their aggressive play turned away many scoring chances. The defence also worked hard to hold off strong attacks from South Huron and Goderich. Ally Muir, Maddie Aarts and Katie Brine anchored the defence, with support from the rest of their Saluki teammates.
Upcoming: The team plays in Stratford and Listowel this week, before returning to DCVI for home games on Thursday, Oct. 17. Games are at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
