KIRKTON – It was a grand weekend for the popular little co-ed Slow Pitch tournament at the Kirkton Community Park, Aug. 10 and 11. This year was the 39th annual event.
The reigning champs, Squirrelly’s Nuts, bowed out in the ‘A’ semi-finals this year in a very close match with the Terrible T’s, who snuck by 24-23. The other ‘A’ semi-final had The Squad winning over Kometz Kidz 16-9.
Sunday’s ‘A’ final was an exciting contest with the T’s leading by a single run after five innings. The Squad grabbed a 12-10 advantage after six innings, but the T’s held on in the seventh, tying it up. Last bat went to the Squad and they ended up with a walk-off win of 13-12 to claim the ‘A’ title.
In the ‘B’ division, the Drunken Leprechauns handily defeated Joe Buck Yourself 16-5 in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Muff n Men doubled up on the Mighty Oaks 24-12.
In the final, the Leprechauns exploded with 14 runs in the first two innings. Muff n Men fought back steadily and by the end of five innings only trailed by a 16-12 margin. However, they could not muster up any more runs and the Leprechauns added one more to win the ‘B’ championship 17-12.
‘C’ division semi-final action saw the Redneck Maffia ousting the Outcasts 30-6. Team Northern had received a bye to the final because one team had to back out of the tournament. The Maffia led 9-7 after the third inning, and then added another seven runs to clinch the ‘C’ title 16-7.
Such a fundraiser for the Kirkton pool could not be possible without the dozens of volunteers who pitch in to help each year. The K-W Optimist Club is grateful for those who organize the tournament, prepare the grounds, look after the food booth, bartend, umpire and help clean up.
Thanks also to all teams for participating and to The Squad, The Terrible T’s, Muff n Men and The Redneck Maffia for donating prize money back to the Kirkton pool.
