Peyton Lobb wins on second extra hole over Carter McDougall at St. Marys G&CC
By Pat Payton
It came down to one putt on the second playoff hole to decide the 2019 Junior Club champion at St. Marys Golf and Country Club last Tuesday.
The par 3 No. 7 hole was used for the playoff. Peyton Lobb, 13, drained a tricky 12-foot putt for bogey to edge Carter McDougall, 15, by a shot. The two players tied the first playoff hole, and had to return to the bottom of the hill to play No. 7 again.
Forty golfers, including four girls, competed in this year’s Junior Club championship.
Both Lobb (46-48) and McDougall (48-46) finished the regulation 18 holes with scores of 94.
“It feels pretty good to be (Junior) club champion,” Lobb said following the playoff, which was watched by a large gallery consisting of players, tourney officials, parents and grandparents.
“I hit some good drives up the middle today. And my putt on the second playoff hole was obviously pretty big,” Lobb added with a smile.
In addition to finishing second overall, McDougall was the boys 14-18 division winner. Finishing second in the division was Jimmy Schiedel (44-53-97), while Thomas Kooy (49-53-102) was third.
In the boys 12-13 division, Nate Schiedel was the runaway winner with a score of 46 over nine holes. Finishing second, all with 57s, were Colton Henderson, Cyler Pickering and Austin Brown.
Nathan Wolfkamp was the winner in the boys 10-11 division with an impressive 37. His round included two birdies (on No. 3 and No. 9). Chase McDougall (43) was second, Myles Clinton (46) third, and Ty Wheeler and Simon Greig tied for fourth overall with 53s.
The boys 10-11 division featured the largest field, with 14 golfers.
In the boys nine-and-under division, Hayden Wright was the clear winner with a 38. The seven participants played six holes. Declan McCotter was second with a 41, Nate Hern was third with a 43, and Dean DeBoer was fourth with a 45.
