CHATHAM – St. Marys Golf and Country Club’s Senior Ryder Cup team successfully qualified for the SouthWest Regional competition held at the beautiful Maple City golf course in Chatham-Kent last Friday, Aug. 16.
The St. Marys G&CC team, consisting of two-man pairings — Merlin Malinowski and Brian Hughes, Neil Dust and Wayne Ross, Rich Parsons and Jonathan Rittenhouse (captain), and Jimmy Craigmile and Rick Fifield — competed against 15 other teams for the right to go the 2019 SRC championship.
In order to advance to the Regional playoff round, the St. Marys team came second in their division–garnering 59 points to division winner Sarnia’s 64. Apart from the Regional competitors, other members of the St. Marys team — John Cooke, Chico Downing and Eric Henkemans — helped St. Marys qualify for the Regionals.
In the SouthWest Regional at Maple City, St. Marys G&CC was up against stiff competition, including playing against the best teams who qualified for the Regional and against competitors who had, in the past, won Ontario championships.
At the end of the day, St. Marys earned 11 points, but not enough to advance to the SRC championship to be held at the prestigious Devil’s Pulpit course (north of Toronto) in early September. Teams from London West Haven (20 points) and Sunningdale, The Oaks and Listowel (16 points each) will represent the SouthWest Region at Devil’s Pulpit.
