There were only 32 golfers in the field, but 10 of them shot good enough scores to qualify to play in Florida next year.
The event was the annual Midwestern Optimist District Junior golf championships, held last Tuesday at St. Marys Golf and Country Club.
The field included six boys from St. Marys, and Chase McDougall was one of the 10 to qualify for a spot in the 2020 Optimist International Junior golf championships at the Doral Resort and Spa in Miami, Florida. That event will be held next July, and all golfers will play three rounds.
McDougall was one of four boys from St. Marys who competed in the 10-11 age division.
Other golfers who qualified for next year’s event in Florida are: Andrew Langford, of London, Kevin Lee, of Markham, Patrick Holloway, of Stratford, Phillip Norris, of Grand Bend, Shreya Dalal, of London, Jarrett Van Bakel, of Mitchell, Evan Hall, of Elmira, Cameron Deeks, of Delaware, and Dominic Marshall, of Sebringville.
Lee, competing in a strong 14-15 age group, fired the day’s best score — a three-over-par 75. Holloway (77) and Norris (79) were second and third in the same age division.
Langford fired a 77 in the boys 16-18 boys division. Dalal posted an 82 in the girls 15-18 division. Van Bakel had the best score (81) in the boys 12-13 division.
Hall (81) had the best score in the boys 10-11 division, followed by Deeks (82), McDougall (91) and Marshall (92).
Other St. Marys Juniors who competed last Tuesday included: Jack McCotter (14-15 division), Jake Grant (12-13 division), and Ty Wheeler, Finn Wright and Declan McCotter (all in the 10-11 division).
The biggest age division was 14-15, with 13 boys competing. From this group, there were four scores in the 70s and six in the 80s.
Midwestern District chairman Bob Ranick told the Independent that it was “wonderful” to see 10 Junior golfers qualify for next year’s prestigious Florida event at Doral. Ranick also hopes to see the field expand to 40 or 50 golfers for next summer’s Midwestern Optimist Junior tournament in St. Marys.
