Team Robson turns in valiant effort in front of big home-town crowd Sunday
By Pat Payton
What a game for the hometown fans Sunday at Rotary Field!
Two St. Marys Rockies teams–Team Ewing and Team Robson–met for the WOBA Mosquito baseball Series 2 championship and a big crowd was on hand. And the two teams didn’t disappoint.
When the dust finally settled, the Ewing squad emerged with a nail-biting 12-11 victory over the Robson crew. It was back and forth the entire game, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats.
After Team Robson jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Team Ewing responded quickly with a six-run rally. The Robson gang, however, didn’t quit and answered with a six-run uprising of their own–tying the contest 9-9. It was anyone’s game at that point.
Urged on by coach Joe Robson, his team pushed across two runs in the top of the fifth inning to grab an 11-9 advantage. The bottom of the fifth would be the final at-bat due to the 90-minute time limit. Team Ewing needed two to tie and three to win, and they pulled out an exciting victory. Julian Walsh had a big hit to drive in a run, and Mike Ewing followed with an RBI double to tie it 11-11. With still nobody out, Harper Murrell’s infield hit knocked in Ewing with the go-ahead run–kicking off the on-field celebrations.
Total team effort, coach says
“It was a total team effort all weekend,” said Ewing head coach Justin Ewing, who coached the team along with his wife Sarah and Dan Murrell. “One through 12, everyone contributed. That’s the way you win a tournament, getting contributions from everybody.”
After losing a six-run lead and then trailing by two, coach Ewing said he wasn’t too concerned. He was confident his team could bounce back.
“We tried to keep the kids pretty level-headed,” Ewing said. “We knew we had time to come back. We were down by five runs in the last (semi-final) game against Howick, so we knew we could do it.
“(In the bottom of the fifth), we had the right part of the line-up going to the plate. The kids had been doing it all weekend, so there was no doubt it my mind . . . I knew we could pull it off.”
Team Robson, meanwhile, was capably coached by Joe Robson, Todd Dittmer and John McAllister. They had a good weekend as well, posting three victories.
Three big hitters for Team Robson in the final game were Chase McDougall, Hayden Wright and Finley Newton.
St. Marys Minor Ball Association hosted the Western Ontario year-end baseball tournament this past weekend.
Three Rockies teams–Team Ewing, Team McGregor and Team Robson–were placed in the eight-team Series 2 division. The St. Marys teams were named after their respective head coaches.
There were also eight Mosquito teams in the Series 4 division. Games were played at Rotary Field, King Diamond and Teddy’s Field.
