Five Fire Lieutenant positions created
On the recommendation of Fire Chief Richard Anderson, Town Council approved a change to the current organizational structure at the Fire Department. The Fire Chief told Council that the staffing ratio of officers to firefighters was identified as unsatisfactory. Under the previous system in 2016, the structure had it that the Fire Chief, one Fire Prevention Officer, one Deputy Fire Chief and three Captains was acceptable but under new Fire Department Staffing guidelines the ratio was unsatisfactory at the present time. In order to rectify this situation Fire Chief Anderson recommended the creation of five Fire Lieutenants positions, who would rank below Captain. The new positions would require candidates to take extra courses and the positive of this would mean that a Fire Lieutenant would be more qualified to be promoted to Captain in the case of a retirement or resignation. The standby annual pay for this position is $1,700, up from $1,200 for a Firefighter, and because this was not budgeted, Council approved an extra $1,250 to cover the portion of the Lieutenants positions for this year.
