Believe it or not, the hockey season is almost here again.
St. Marys Lincolns open their 2019-20 main training camp next Wednesday, Aug. 14 at the PRC, with about 40 skaters hitting the ice at 8 p.m. Another on-ice workout is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 15.
Lincs go into camp with 19 or 20 players signed, General Manager Greg Smale recently told the Independent. He says the Western Conference team will carry a maximum of 23 players.
“We have a lot of players signed, but the objective of having a large camp is to make sure people are competing for their jobs,” Smale said. “Nobody should feel that they’re given anything because they’ve signed a card. We want to make sure that we leave camp with the best team possible.”
First pre-season games
Lincolns’ first exhibition game is Saturday, Aug. 17. Cambridge Redhawks will be the visitors for a 1:30 p.m. start on the PRC’s Blue rink. On Sunday, Aug. 18, Lincs host Stratford Warriors at 6:30 p.m. Both Cambridge and Stratford are members of the GOJHL’s Midwestern Conference.
Lincolns’ final two pre-season games are the following weekend on the road. They are in Stratford on Friday, Aug. 23 for a 7:30 p.m. face-off at the Rotary complex, then travel to Hespeler the following day to play the Redhawks at 1:30 p.m.
Showcase Weekend Sept. 6-8
Lincs’ first two regular-season games are at the GOJHL Showcase Weekend in Pelham on the Sept. 6-8 weekend. Lincolns play Brampton Bombers, of the Midwestern loop, on Friday, Sept. 6 at 5 p.m., and Fort Erie Meteors of the Golden Horseshoe Conference on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 8 a.m.
Both games count in the standings.
