It was a great day for the St. Marys team as the Junior Golf League of Huron-Perth held its first round of competition last Tuesday at St. Marys Golf and Country Club.
The St. Marys Juniors won six of eight matches and picked up a total of 23 points–the best of any of the six teams that competed. Other golfers came from the Stratford Country Club, Stratford Municipal, Mitchell Golf and Country Club, Listowel Golf and Country Club, and the Fox Golf Club (near Granton).
Almost 60 Juniors, ranging in age from 9 to 16, competed last Tuesday in four age divisions: (9-10 Novice), (11-12 Atom), (13-14 Peewee), and (15-16 Bantam). All golfers played nine holes in the two-person Scramble format, and then enjoyed lunch courtesy of the host course.
St. Marys G&CC was dominant in the 9-10 Novice division, winning all three matches 4-0, 4-0 and 3-1. In the 11-12 Atom division, St. Marys defeated Listowel opponents 4-0 and 3-1.
In the 13-14 Peewee division, St. Marys defeated Listowel 3.5 points to 0.5 points, but lost 2.5 to 1.5 to golfers from the Fox. In the 15-16 Bantam division, St. Marys lost 4-0 to the Stratford Country Club.
Golfers, who are representing St. Marys G&CC in the Junior Golf League, are as follows: Ty Wheeler, Hayden Wright, Nathan Wolfkamp, Declan McCotter, Donovan McGregor and Nicholas Brintnell (9-10 teams); Nate Schiedel, Chase McDougall, Hayden Brintnell and Simon Greig (11-12 teams); Jack McCotter, Jake Grant, Jimmy Schiedel and Peyton Lobb (13-14 teams); and Carter McDougall and Thomas Kooy (15-16 team).
This week, the Junior golfers are back in league action, playing at the Stratford Muni on Tuesday and at Mitchell G&CC on Thursday. The sixth and final (championship) round will be held in Listowel later this summer.
