In Sr. Ryder Cup golf competition; fourth round Thursday in Goderich
After three matches in their division in the Senior Ryder Cup (SRC) golf competition, the St. Marys Golf and Country Club team is in second place, with 46 points, and just one behind front-runner Sarnia which has 47. St. Clair Parkway is third at 32 and Goderich Sunset rounds out the four teams with 19 points.
The final match of the division will be held Thursday, July 11 at Goderich Sunset.
The top two teams from the division after that match will advance to the Regional at Maple City golf club (Chatham) on Aug. 16. There, 16 teams will compete for the top four spots. Those four teams will then go on to compete for the SRC championship at Devil’s Pulpit (in Caledon, north of Toronto) on Sept. 6.
In their last match held at St. Marys G&CC on July 2, the home team had an excellent outing–winning 22 out of a possible 24 points. Rick Fifield and Jimmy Craigmile, Rich Parsons and Chico Downing, and Merlin Malinowski and Brian Hughes each had perfect 6-0 scores, while Neil Dust and Jonathan Rittenhouse (captain) edged their opponents 4-2.
In earlier matches at Sarnia and St. Clair Parkway (Mooretown), the St. Marys team came away with 12 points at each event. So far, 11 golfers of the 13-member team have competed, including those who played at St. Marys, as well as Eric Henkemans, Wayne Ross and John Cooke. Greg Thompson and Derek Van Der Linden round out the team.
The SRC now boasts 124 club teams in 31 divisions, divided into four regions. Approximately 1,500 Senior golfers will compete this year and all hope to be part of the lucky and talented 16 club teams who will play at the prestigious Devil’s Pulpit course. The St. Marys team has competed in the SRC since 2016, and twice has successfully made it to the championship round (2016 and 2018).
