Canada turns 152 years old this year and there’s no better place to party on Monday, July 1 than at Cadzow Park in St. Marys!
Begin your Canada Day in a healthy way with a fun workout at 10:00 a.m., courtesy of the St. Marys Friendship Centre. Meet at the performing arts stage for an upbeat workout suitable for all ages.
After working up an appetite, dig into a delicious pancake breakfast courtesy of Thames Vista Farms. The breakfast is by-donation to the St. Marys Museum, and please bring your reusable dishware and utensils to cut down on waste. The breakfast runs until 1:00 p.m. or while supplies last.
There’s lots of other tasty treats available during the party. The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will host its fundraising barbecue, and Living Rock Church will have its popular popcorn available for free. The Sunset Shack will also offer a fun selection of street eats for purchase. Stay hydrated all day long by bringing your refillable containers to the free OCWA water buggy.
This year, everyone’s a winner when it comes to butter tarts! In lieu of a third annual baking contest, past contestants have agreed to donate batches of butter tarts to sell as a fundraiser for the museum, beginning at 11:00 a.m. – look for the booth near the breakfast tent.
However you’re enjoying the morning, watch for the popular Canada Day parade! The ever-growing parade departs the Pyramid Recreation Centre at 11:00 a.m. and makes its way downtown. The parade is free to enter; register your float by calling organizer Don Pike at 519-284-1548.
The official flag-raising and singing of the National Anthem will take place at 1:00 p.m. Patsy Anne Day will also acknowledge our indigenous homelands. Following the ceremony, enjoy a birthday cupcake courtesy of McDonald’s Independent Grocer.
This year, enjoy three diverse musical performances. The Halftones kick off the day at 11:00 a.m. with Big Band and Swing tunes, followed by Paul Droog with children’s favourites at noon. Harmony of Friends are new to our Canada Day festivities, but no strangers to upbeat interpretations of classic pop and rock hits. They’ll perform two afternoon sets.
Throughout the afternoon, enjoy activities for all ages, including face painting and tattoos, and fun with the St. Marys Public Library and the Cadzow Village residents’ group. Pack your swimsuit as the splash pad will be open all day; as will be the St. Marys Museum for checking out all exhibits or fashioning a children’s craft.
While the party officially winds down at 4:00 p.m., the Friends of the St. Marys Library’s popular “movie in the park” is an excellent reason to return at dusk! Bring your blankets and cuddles to enjoy a free family-friendly film under the stars.
Offering something for everyone, Cadzow Park is the place to celebrate Canada Day in St. Marys!
