The highest honour in Rotary

STRATFORD – St. Marys resident and business owner Brian Dundas was one of four people specially honoured by the Festival City Rotary Club of Stratford here Tuesday, May 28 for contributions to the community.
Assistant District Governor Dianne Yundt presented Paul Harris Fellowships, the highest honour in Rotary, to recognize local people whose lives exemplify the humanitarian and educational objectives of The Rotary Foundation. Other 2019 winners are Bob Currah, and Sharon and Lorne Twamley, all of Stratford.
Dundas has devoted his life to sports and related activities as a player, coach and referee with All-Ontario, Provincial and one Canadian championship (Junior fastball) team. He has also donated hockey bags (to carry supplies) and sports equipment for the Rotary Club’s many medical mission trips. Dundas is owner of Dunny’s Source for Sports stores in both St. Marys and Stratford.
For 30 years, Currah has created and managed garden plots throughout Stratford to supply over 6,000 pounds of produce annually to the House of Blessing and the Salvation Army.
The Twamleys volunteered their time as coaches and board members for Minor Girls Softball, Ringette, and the Stratford Minor Sports Council for many years. Sharon is also a recipient of the Sportsperson of the Year Award, and was recently inducted into the Sports Wall of Fame in Stratford.
Rotarian Jean Aitcheson, of Avonton, who has been travelling to Third World countries for about 25 years, was instrumental in Dundas being considered for the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship award. Also a Harris Fellowship award winner, Aitcheson was thrilled for Dundas.
“It’s absolutely wonderful,” Aitcheson told the Independent. “Brian has done all kinds of volunteer work for the whole community. I’ve known Brian all my life, and he’s an amazing young man.”
Later this year, Aitcheson will be travelling back to the Dominican Republic on another Rotary medical mission trip. The local Rotarians will be working in five or six villages.
