Wellspring golf tournament Friday, May 31
St. Marys Golf and Country Club members will be playing in their fourth Senior Ryder Cup (SRC) competition this year. The SRC competition now comprises golfers from 120 clubs throughout the province as well as U.S. states Michigan and New York.
Divided into four regions and 30 divisions, the SRC competition involves each four club division playing each other on their home courses. The top two clubs from each division will then compete in four regional playoffs and then the best 16 from the regionals advance to the final championship. This year, it will be held at Devil’s Pulpit (in Caledon, north of Toronto) on Sept. 5.
The St. Marys Sr. Ryder Cup team has successfully made it to the championship twice in the past three years. This year, they will be competing in the South West region and against stiff competition within their division — St. Clair Parkway, Sarnia and London West Haven.
The competition is two-man match play golf in various formats — Scramble, Better Ball, Chapman and Shamble. Should St. Marys finish first or second within their division after the four divisional matches, they will compete at the South West Regional at Maple City (Chatham) on Aug. 16.
In each match, four two-man teams compete against divisional rivals. The St. Marys team is made up of experienced SRC competitors — John Cooke, Jimmy Craigmile, Neil Dust, Rick Fifield, Eric Henkemans, Brian Hughes, Merlin Malinowski, Rich Parsons, Jonathan Rittenhouse (Captain), Wayne Ross, Greg Thompson and newcomers Chico Downing and Derek Van der Linden.
The St. Marys divisional competition starts June 5 at St. Clair Parkway (Scramble format), then continues at Sarnia on June 18 (Chapman format), heads eastward to St. Marys on Tuesday, July 2 (Better Ball format), and concludes July 19 at London’s West Haven (Shamble format).
