STRATFORD – The DCVI Junior badminton team took to the courts at the Stratford Agriplex for the Huron-Perth championships last Tuesday, Apr. 16.
With a full team of 16 players, the action was fast and furious. After the dust settled, several Saluki players were still playing after the third round. The following are some of the day’s highlights:
After a tough first-round loss, the mixed doubles team of Sophie Brockman and Carter McDougall won three straight matches en route to a seventh-place finish.
In a very tough girls singles division, Jelena Lorentz and Shyann Mills both won matches with Mills playing her way to a sixth-place finish.
In boys doubles, Zach Rooney and Kirk Boreham won three matches to place seventh, while the team of Sam Sedley and Aaron Waugh won four matches to finish fifth overall — narrowly missing out on a WOSSAA qualifying position. The Sedley-Waugh duo just missed qualifying for the Western Ontario meet–losing by two points in the third and deciding game against a strong Listowel pair.
In girls doubles, DCVI had two strong entries. Jennifer Loeffler and Halley Robertson won two matches against solid competition. The Saluki players of the day were partners Ava Bettger and McKayla Gagnon. This duo played their way to a third-place finish and a berth at WOSSAA on Tuesday, April 30.
“Congratulations to all players on a great season and good luck to McKayla and Ava as they represent DCVI at WOSSAA next week,” coach Marcou said.
Note: Two girls doubles teams–Aimee King and Nathalie Bettger, and Hazel Taylor and Kayley Thompson–are representing DCVI at the WOSSAA Senior badminton championships this Thursday, Apr. 25 in Strathroy.
