St. Marys looks to repeat in FM96 Small Town Contest
By Stewart Grant
They didn’t make a rule saying we couldn’t win two years in a row, so let’s give it a go!
FM96’s March Madness-themed contest is back for a second year. Last year, St. Marys defeated Arva, Lucan, Thorndale, Bayfield, Tillsonburg and then Thamesford in the finals to finish in top spot among the 64 communities vying for “Best Small Town in Southwestern Ontario.” As a result, The Taz Show on FM96 broadcast live from St. Marys last May which was a memorable experience for residents, listeners and the FM96 team alike.
For this year’s tournament, St. Marys enters as the #1 seed in the competitive North bracket, and faces Benmiller in the first round. Should we hold onto our comfortable lead (we are up roughly 75% to 25% as of press time), the second-round matchup will provide a stern test since it will be either Bayfield or Granton.
Repeating in a contest such as this will be difficult, because neutral voters may be more likely to choose a community that hasn’t won previously. It will be interesting to see how far we get!
