Wine + Cheese Open House to be held on March 30th
By Stewart Grant
The 1st of March represented a special anniversary for the Kinette Club of St. Marys, as it marked 50 years since the Club’s Charter date of March 1st, 1969.
Phyllis Spearin of St. Marys was one of the original charter members of the club and continues to serve actively in Kinettes to this day. This past week, I had the chance to speak with Phyllis about the past five decades of Kinettes, a club whose motto is ‘serving the community’s greatest need.’
“Back at that time (1969), you could only be a Kinette if your husband was a Kinsmen, as my husband Bill was,” said Phyllis. “I’m not sure how many we started with, but a lot of people came on board after it started. Certainly the biggest change from then to now has been the opening up of the club, so that anyone in the community can join.”
The contributions by the Kinette Club to the local community are numerous and have evolved over the years. As a community builder, they have made significant contributions to the Pyramid Recreation Centre, St. Marys Memorial Hospital and to minor sports. The Kinettes have also done so much from a community service standpoint, be it Meals on Wheels, the Blood Donor Clinic, starting the first-ever babysitting course in St. Marys, and running the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Westover Inn.
One of the traditions of the Kinette Club is doing something special on the National Day of Kindness. “This year we made treats (muffins, cookies, etc.) and brought coffee to both Nursing Homes for the workers and staff,” said Phyllis. “Other years we’ve taken treats to the police and firemen, or helped people out with groceries.”
Although the Kinettes do so much good for the community, the social aspect within the Club is also paramount. “The irreplaceable friendships that we’ve made over the years through the Kinettes and Kinsman, [Bill and I] wouldn’t have had the chance to meet these people otherwise,” said Phyllis. “Aside from getting married and having children, our decision to join [Kinsmen and Kinettes] is among the very best decisions of our lives.”
To celebrate 50 years of service for the St. Marys Kinette Club, there is a Wine & Cheese Open House planned for Saturday, March 30th from 2-4 p.m. at the Masonic Hall on 10 Thames Road. Also remember to mark your calendars for the Annual Kinette Auction which takes place on April 27th at the Pyramid Recreation Centre.
The Kinette Club of St. Marys meets typically on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
