AURORA – Stratford Aces Bantam ‘A’ team won the International Silver Stick title here on the Feb. 1-3 weekend.
Two local skaters, Avery Aarts and Olivia Brock, helped the Aces reach the championship final, where they defeated Clarington Flames 2-1 on the Sunday. The team made it through the round-robin portion of the tournament without surrendering a goal. The Bantams gave up only three goals all weekend, relying on strong defence and goaltending to support the potent offence provided by the Aces forwards.
The Stratford team defeated Bluewater Hawks 4-0, Smiths Falls Cubs 5-0, and the Aurora Panthers 1-0 in round-robin play. They defeated another Aurora team 5-2 in the quarter-finals and Sarnia Lady Sting 3-0 in the semi-finals, before meeting Clarington (from the Oshawa area) in the final.
The Bantam Aces are coached by Dennis Aarts, who was assisted by Jeremy Brock during the championship weekend.
A total of 52 teams from across Ontario and the U.S. competed in this Silver Stick tourney. Aces were one of 12 teams in the Bantam ‘A’ division.
