In WRRL action, St. Marys U-14 Snipers hosted the Goderich Ice Crushers on Saturday at the PRC.
Snipers were looking for a little payback after the Ice Crushers defeated St. Marys last weekend at the Snipers ringette tournament, knocking the host team out of contention. Tension in the air was “hot” before the game even began and a fire alarm was triggered before the teams even took to the ice. PRC staff did a great job determining it was a false alarm, and the game began only a few minutes late.
The teams were both scoreless in the first half, with Goderich out-shooting the Snipers 15–8. Arielle Barber was strong in net, turning away several good scoring chances. In the second half, Ice Crushers capitalized with the man advantage and opened the scoring at 12:03 as Jenna Hutton was in the penalty box for hooking.
The lead did not last long though, as on the ensuing free pass Ella Taylor fed Jillian Sterkenburg who broke in with a head of steam, deked out the Goderich netminder and back-handed the ring into the top corner for the highlight goal of the game, making it 1–1.
Thirty-five seconds later, Sarah Lynch made it 2-1 after taking a great feed from Megan Richardson. Forty seconds after that, Richardson scored to make it 3–1 Snipers, with assists going to Olivia Nugent and Celeste Brandt. Sterkenburg later picked up her second of the game and Anaya Larmer connected with five minutes remaining as St. Marys took the win, 5–1. The game was then cut short as a curfew was implemented due to the false alarm before the game.
After the game, the team held their annual “secret Santa” gift exchange and then spent the afternoon bowling at St. Marys Bowling Lanes. It was a great opportunity for some team bonding off the ice.
The U-14 Snipers improved to 8–3 with Saturday’s win, and now sit in second place in the WRRL’s West Division with 16 points. St. Marys travelled to the Seaforth Arena on Tuesday night of this week. This was the last game before Christmas, then Jim Burlingham’s Snipers host Mitchell on Dec. 29 to close out 2018.
The Snipers would like to thank all of the fans for your support and wish everyone a Merry Christmas!
