It was a big week for Stonetown Cheese!
For the third consecutive year, the local cheese company won first-place honours at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. This year, it was Stonetown’s Fontina cheese and Farmstead Emmental cheese that led their respective categories when the winners were announced on Thursday.
Company owners Hans and Jolanda were at the Royal in Toronto on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to sample and sell their cheese, and will be returning there again this Friday and Sunday.
Following last weekend’s visit to the Royal, Hans and Jolanda drove to the British Empire Cheese Competition in Belleville where the local cheese company were recognized once again for their quality products. First-place awards were won by Stonetown’s Grand Trunk (hard cheese category), Farmstead Emmental (Swiss cheese category), and Farmstead Fontina (semi-firm cheese category) brands. Fresh Curds took second-place in the fresh cheese area, while third-place awards were given to Homecoming (Smear ripened type) and Capri Ella (in both goat milk cheese open class and artisan goat milk cheese class). Best of all, Stonetown Artisan Cheese was honoured with the title of “Grand Champion Specialty Cheese” for 2018.
“We are super excited, happy and proud about these awards,” said Jolanda Weber on behalf of the Stonetown Cheese team.
While the company is gaining attention at cheese competitions such as the Royal and British Empire, Jolanda reported that they are also making headway in other areas. “We are federally licensed and have HACCP (high-level food safety standard) status since the end of May,” said Weber. “We are now able to sell all over Canada. We are also one of the only small on-farm processors in Ontario with this type of license.”
Congratulations to Roman, Hans and Jolanda on their continued success!
