Boyd brothers team up for red-hot Frayne Bantams
By Pat Payton
It was a great night for St. Marys hockey teams this past Monday, Oct. 29 at the PRC.
Rock teams picked up three wins and a tie in four Shamrock League games.
One of the hottest teams in the SMMHA is the Frayne Custom Cabinets A-E Bantams. Dale Switzer’s squad skated to a 6-0 victory over their South Huron counterparts.
The Boyd brothers took care of all the St. Marys scoring. Owen Boyd fired four in a row and Ian Boyd added the other two goals. Ian Boyd and Lucas McCurdy were the playmakers with three assists each. Both Boyds finished the night with five points.
Jack Aarts earned the shutout for the Rock, who built period leads of 1-0 and 4-0. The visiting Sabres hurt their cause by taking 34 of the 43 penalty minutes.
For the Frayne Bantams, meanwhile, it was their sixth straight league win and improved their SHL record to 7-2-1. It left them in a first-place tie with Mt. Brydges Cougars (7-0-1).
Switzer and company will soon be competing in their Regional Silver Stick tournament. It’s scheduled for the Nov. 16-18 weekend in Collingwood. Before heading north, the Bantams host Lambeth on Monday, Nov. 12, starting at 8:30 p.m.
McCotter enjoys productive night
Another player who enjoyed a productive night Oct. 29 was Declan McCotter. The Finnbilt ‘BB’ Novices’ winger collected four goals, including the winner, in a convincing 6-1 SHL win over the Petrolia Oilers. McCotter was a threat every time he was on the ice.
Speedy centre Dan Dittmer scored the other two goals for St. Marys, which built period leads of 2-0 and 4-1 with an aggressive forechecking attack. Graeme Froud and Ryder Blight were the playmakers with two assists each, and Landon Lichti and Nolan Stewart shared the net win.
It was the second league win in a row for Todd Dittmer’s squad. After two road games this weekend, the Finnbilt crew hosts Strathroy on Nov. 12 at 6:45 p.m.
HBC Peewees get third straight win
The Home Building Centre A-E Peewees were the other Rock team which posted a win on Oct. 29.
Goals by Oliver McHugh, Jonah Lariviere and Hayden Brintnell lifted St. Marys to a 3-1 victory over the South Huron Sabres. Trevor Aarts lost his shutout bid in the third period, after the home team carried a 3-0 lead into the final 15 minutes.
There were just three minor penalties called in the tame affair.
It was the third straight league win for Sean Porter’s crew, improving their record to 4-5-1. Starting at the recent A-E tournament, the HBC Peewees have been playing well lately–just in time for their Regional Silver Stick event in just over a week. Before that, the Rock hosts Petrolia on Nov. 12 at 7:10 p.m.
Dunny’s Atoms get tie in third
A third-period goal by Andre Mollet gave the Dunny’s Source for Sports A-E Atoms a 1-1 tie with their South Huron counterparts Oct. 29. Assists went to Cody King and Nicholas Brintnell.
The Sabres’ goal came in the first period. Isaac Cousineau was between the pipes for St. Marys.
The Atom Rock now sits with a 3-5-3 record in the SHL standings. This coming weekend, the Dunny’s squad has three Shamrock games in three days, including two on the road. They entertain Petrolia on Nov. 12 at 6 p.m.
Matt King’s charges are the third St. Marys A-E team that is preparing for Silver Stick competition in Collingwood on the weekend of Nov. 16-18.
