St. Marys one of 16 golf teams heading to Saugeen Sept. 14
BARRIE – Playing in swirling winds and eventual torrential rain, St. Marys Golf and Country Club’s Senior Ryder Cup team advanced to the 2018 Senior Ryder Cup championship, placing second out of 14 teams in the Northeast Regional.
At beautiful Tangle Creek Golf Club, near Barrie, St. Marys’ eight-man team conquered the elements, finishing just behind Barrie Country Club and tied with Guelph’s Cutten Fields.
In the better-ball format, teams of Wayne Ross and Neil Dust, Rich Parsons and Jonathan Rittenhouse, Rick Fifield and Jimmy Craigmile, and Merlin Malinowski and Brian Hughes accumulated 17 points out of a possible 24.
The 2018 Senior Ryder Cup started out in May with 112 teams competing in four regions and 28 divisions. Now 16 teams, including St. Marys, will play at Saugeen Golf Club (near Port Elgin) on Friday, Sept. 14 for the Senior Ryder Cup championship.
St. Marys has competed in the Senior Ryder Cup competition since 2016, and has twice advanced to the championship day. Quite an accomplishment for the Stonetown’s men!
