After completing four matches in its division, the St. Marys Golf and Country Club Senior Ryder Cup team has emerged victorious and will be proceeding to the next stage in Senior Ryder Cup competition — the NorthEast Regional.
Competing against teams from Saugeen (Port Elgin), Ainsdale (Kincardine) and Elmira in a variety of two-man, match-play formats, St. Marys ended up with 71 points — besting the second-place team, Saugeen, which had 53 points.
Nine players on the St. Marys’ 13-man roster have competed, so far: Jimmy Craigmile, Neil Dust, Rick Fifield, Eric Henkemans, Brian Hughes, Merlin Malinowski, Rich Parsons, Wayne Ross and Jonathan Rittenhouse.
The NorthEast Regional, to be held at Tangle Creek (south of Barrie) on Tuesday, Aug. 21, will include 14 teams who finished either first or second in the seven divisions in the region. The four best teams from each regional competition (there are four in total) will advance to the SRC championship to be held at Saugeen G&CC on Friday, Sept. 14.
Two years ago, in 2016, the St. Marys Senior Ryder Cup team went to the SRC championship in St. Catharines. This year’s team is looking forward to the NorthEast Regional, as Tangle Creek is rated as one of the best courses in Ontario. With some continued good play and a bit of luck, St. Marys wants, again, to be playing for the provincial championship.
