Their offence has been on fire!
In the last three games, all convincing victories, the Veterinary Purchasing Midget-Junior girls team has scored a whopping 54 runs.
Last Tuesday night at Teddy’s Field, Rob Wiffen’s squad swept a Huron-Perth Fastball League doubleheader–hammering Sweaburg 20-0 in a four-inning mercy and then sending Ayr Jr. Vics home with a 14-3 defeat. The two wins improved St. Marys’ record to 4-2 and moved them into a temporary first-place tie with Fullarton, Wilmot (New Hamburg) and Byron in the league standings.
St. Marys 20 – Sweaburg 0
In their opening game Tuesday, Natalie Reay pitched all four innings and struck out 10 Sweaburg batters. She allowed just two singles and two walks, and didn’t allow a Sweaburg runner to advance past second base in the one-sided affair.
The Vet. Purchasing crew scored seven runs in both the third and fourth innings.
Carly McEwan, Lauren Cameron and Jamie Johns paced the plate parade with three runs each. Contributing two runs apiece were Robyn Lewis, Marie Mossey and Kaitlyn Sleeper.
One of the big hits for the home team was
a two-run homer by shortstop Ashlyn Maxwell. McEwan went 3-for-3, while Reay, Lewis, Johns, Mossey, Cameron and Natalie Bettger all chipped in two hits each.
“Everyone hit really well,” assistant coach Kelly Wiffen reported.
St. Marys 14 – Ayr 3
In the nightcap against the Jr. Vics from Ayr, the Vet. Purchasing Midgets led 7-2 after four complete innings and then broke it open with a six-run rally in the bottom of the fifth.
Lead-off batter Jensen Dundas and Kaitlyn Sleeper both rapped two hits and scored twice for St. Marys. Robyn Lewis added a pair of extra-base hits and Natalie Reay also had two hits and reached base all three times. Ashlyn Maxwell and Lindsay Hannaberry contributed two runs apiece, with Hannaberry reaching base all three times she went to the plate.
Pitchers Aimee King and Maxwell combined to toss a three-hitter, with just two walks, and they combined for four strikeouts.
Upcoming: The Vet. Purchasing Midget-Juniors are back in H-P action this Friday, June 15 when they travel to Ayr to meet the Jr. Vics. Their next home game is Tuesday, June 19 when they host Fullarton A’s at 8:30 p.m.
