The fine tradition of the St. Marys Farmers’ Market continues this Saturday. Having started in 1992, this will be the market’s 26th season.
Ann Slater, Chair of the Farmers’ Market Association board, expects that marketgoers will be pleased to see not only their favorite vendors from last year but also some new participants that will help round out the weekly offerings.
As in prior years, the market is all about locally-raised or locally-made food. Most vendors are based within 35 kilometres of St. Marys, with the exceptions generally being those who are filling a unique need. This is the case with Pillitteri Estates Winery, a new vendor this year that comes from the Niagara-On-The-Lake region so well known for their vineyards.
The variety of produce available at the Farmers’ Market continues to improve and evolve. The organization’s Facebook page this week referenced their meat products as a fine example:
“Along with Taylor Heritage Hogs, the Bradley family will have lamb and Slaters will have organic veal, ground beef and summer sausage. How about pork sausage for breakfast, beef summer sausage for lunch and lamb chops for supper?”
Farmers’ Markets are popular throughout Ontario, providing customers with the opportunity to support local and family farms, take comfort in knowing the origin of their food, while enjoying a wide variety of healthy, fresh flavours.
The St. Marys Farmers’ Market is located within the parking lot off Jones Street, between Water and Wellington Streets. It runs each Saturday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. until noon, from Victoria Day Weekend to Hallowe’en.
Sean and Megan Brode will be taking over the role of Market Manager this year and will be manning the market booth. Lynette Geddes, who was Manager in the past, remains very much involved with the Farmers’ Market but in a different capacity through both her position on the board and by coordinating other events for the Market this year.
