St. Marys minor hockey holds its annual AGM recently
By Pat Payton
St. Marys Minor Hockey Association has its third woman president in its storied history, which now dates back over 60 years.
Kristene McCurdy will head the association during the 2018-19 season. She was elected to the position at the SMMHA’s annual AGM (Annual General Meeting) on Tuesday, May 1 at the PRC.
The two other women who have served as SMMHA presidents are Cindy Bilyea and Patti Drinkwalter.
McCurdy spent the last two seasons as the association’s first vice-president.
“As president, I hope to maintain things and keep things running smoothly,” she told the Independent. “We have a few different changes with the Initiation program and the Novice program coming up.
“We want to keep minor hockey in St. Marys going strong, and keep all our players and volunteers happy.”
McCurdy, who had her three children playing in minor hockey this past season, has been a member of the association for about 10 years.
She has worn many hats over the past decade, such as working with the Mite and Tyke committee, convening the Novice program and helping to run a Novice tournament for a few years. And for the past four or five seasons, she has chaired the boys Additional-Entry tournament hosted by the SMMHA.
Other dedicated volunteers
New to St. Marys minor hockey’s executive is Mark Brintnell, who will serve as first vice-president next year. Matt King returns for another year as second vice-president.
Also returning are Judy Greig and Bernie Sterkenburg as secretary and treasurer, respectively. Chris Boyd is past president and ice convener for a third straight season.
These SMMHA members will hold the following positions for 2018-19.
Dan Rudorfer continues as association registrar. Also back are John Hodkinson (Shamrock League rep.), Mike Morning (OWHA rep.), Reg Clinton (WOGHL rep.) and Pete Frehner (OMHA rep.). New Lambton-Middlesex rep. is Don Gibson, a former SMMHA president.
Jeremy Brock will continue his fine work as association webmaster.
–St. Marys minor hockey is looking for more volunteers to sit on committees and help spread out the work load next season.
On the association’s website, it states: Please consider putting your name forward for a leadership position, or at the very least consider attending a monthly meeting (generally held on the first Tuesday of each month) to learn more about how you can help SMMHA maintain the programs and supports that are currently in place. Contact McCurdy or Boyd for more information.
–The SMMHA is looking for girls to join their Atom, Peewee and Midget teams next season. Both skaters and goalies are needed.
–The annual Gary Douglas Memorial golf tournament is Saturday, Aug. 18 at River Valley G&CC. Each year, proceeds are earmarked for under-privileged youngsters in the SMMHA, and the association encourages people to get out and support this worthwhile event.
