March 1, 2018 marked 20 years in business serving St. Marys and area
20 years ago after the devastating Feed Mill Fire owned by McPhail’s Feed Services, Kathy McPhail had an opportunity to open the Pet Store in the downtown. It was something that she thought St. Marys needed. “I have always used the slogan “Small town Service, Big City Selection. If we don’t have it, ask. We can get what the big box stores have”. As years went on, the business expanded with 10 fish tanks, a program with the Humane society to adopt kittens and cats, and an expanded pet collection to include hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas. Even reptiles and a live snake as a pet have been purchased through the store.
McPhails have also expanded into other lines including “Frozen meats for Human Consumption”. Kathy said that they work with Perth Pork Products and Norpac Beef to offer high quality frozen meats including smoked pork chops, bacon, ground beef and strip sirloin roasts and steaks. All meats are frozen and packaged and available at the Pet Store. “I have always said to customers, “only in St. Marys can you buy your Meat at the Pet Store” Kathy said.
They have also expanded into “POOK PRODUCTS”. After running into Tony Pook at a pet trade show where he was launching his new dog jackets, Kathy decided that she needed to carry the entire line. “The Pook line was a local business from St. Marys and no one was carrying any of their products. I saw a need for this in St. Marys and started carrying the line. Also, six years ago, I was given the opportunity to sell Tupperware and so I set up a small display at the store. I am now also a Director with Tupperware and enjoy helping people with their Tupperware purchases and warranty issues. Tupperware is celebrating this year 70 years in Business”.
So to the next 20 years and McPhail’s Pet and Animal Needs, Kathy said that she looks forward to continuing to service the community. “If we don’t have it, just ask. We are “Small Town Service, with Big City Selection”. Kathy said that she would like to say “Thank you to all our customers current, past and present for allowing me to stay in Business and serve you. It truly is an honour to be part of the Community of St. Marys”.
