Our new crowdfunding site is www.patreon.com/stmarysindy

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts on my phone. Not only are they free, but I’m learning so much about a wide variety of subjects. One of the podcasts I listened to recently was one called CANADALAND, run by a journalist named Jesse Brown who is a Canadian media critic.
While I sought out the CANADALAND podcasts to learn more about the recent Metroland/Postmedia deal that closed dozens of community newspapers last fall, I ended up learning about something entirely different at the very end of the podcast when Jesse said, “If you like what we do, please support us on Patreon.” This made me ask, “What is Patreon?” which I quickly investigated.
I discovered that CANADALAND, while free to listen to, covers its costs thanks to not only its corporate sponsors but by its loyal listeners (such as myself now) who voluntarily pledge their support through a crowdfunding site called Patreon. This platform is based on the idea of “patronage” which dates back to the times of Shakespeare, Da Vinci and other creative minds whose projects were funded by patrons who enjoyed their works.
I have decided to set up a Patreon crowdfunding page for the St. Marys Independent. Support generated through Patreon will be invested in new ideas and projects to make your community newspaper better than ever.
The most common suggestion that we get about the Independent is, “you should charge people for the paper”, but that is something that we never want to do. We love making our newspaper available free for everyone, because that gives us the maximum number of readers, which is particularly important for our advertisers…the various businesses and organizations in our community.
But I do recognize that many people WANT to help us succeed and help us continually improve. It is for these patrons or members that this crowdfunding site exists. In turn, we have special rewards that are set up to let us thank our membership:
– Patrons who pledge $2 USD/month (the site deals in USD only) will receive an email each Wednesday night linking them to the weekly paper, giving them “first look” at the Thursday newspaper
– Patrons who pledge $3/month will receive our amazing “2018 St. Marys Year in Review” glossy keepsake booklet which is due for release in early 2019.
– Patrons can also order subscriptions through the website
To borrow a line from CANADALAND, “If you like what we do, please support us on Patreon.”
