The 14th annual Meridian Hope for Haiti bonspiel took place at the Lind Sportsplex last Saturday, Feb. 17. Approximately 100 people enjoyed this charity event in support of Hope for Haiti projects.
Sixty-four curlers participated in this fun-filled day as family and friends cheered on.
The main projects this year are continued funding for the Pinson School in a remote area of Haiti for 200-plus students from preschool to Grade 8 and 10 dedicated teachers. Transportation up to this mountainous site is by walking or donkey, and there is zero clean water available and no electricity.
There are plans for 2018 to work with the community of Pinson to continue building the school, install solar panels and improve rain water collection.
A team of five Hope for Haiti members will travel March 19 to March 26 to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to work on a second project. They will be building 35 desks for the Education Center in Cite Soleil.
This school has a three-year program for approximately 50 children, ages 9 to 14. These children live in extreme poverty and are taught social skills, reading, writing and sports.
A total of $2,715 was raised at Saturday’s event. Organizers wish to thank all those who helped with and contributed to this charity event. A special thanks to Meridian Credit Union for their donation towards the meal.
Early draw winners were: Matt Aarts, Anne Aarts, Paul Mitchell and Chris Meyer.
Late draw winners were: Tony Reynen, Verna Strathdee, Maxine Coulthard and Paul Grose.
