On Monday, Jan. 29 at the PRC, a hat trick by Jared Ballantyne paced the Dunny’s Source for Sports A-E Atoms to a 9-0 romp over the Petrolia Oilers.
It was the fourth straight OMHA playoff win for Sean Porter’s squad. They are currently involved in a four-team round-robin, with Dorchester Dragons and Mt. Brydges the other teams taking part. In their four games to date, the St. Marys Atoms have scored 17 goals and allowed just two.
In the Jan. 29 home-ice win, Grier Mahoney added a goal and two assists. The other singles came off the sticks of Simon Greig, Brody Higham, Sam Johnson, Graysen Porter and Myles Clinton. Contributing two assists each were Jonah Lariviere, Ty Wheeler and Connor Wheeler.
Trevor Aarts posted the shutout for the Rock, who built period leads of 1-0 and 4-0. Petrolia took just two minor penalties, but St. Marys scored on the powerplay both times.
The Dunny’s Atoms host Mt. Brydges on Monday, Feb. 5 at 6:45 p.m. Porter and company then travel to Petrolia on Sunday, Feb. 11 for a 2:50 p.m. face-off.
Foodland Novices win big
The Stonetown Foodland A-E Novices improved their round-robin series record to 2-2-1 with a one-sided 12-1 victory over the visiting Dorchester Dragons on Monday, Jan. 29.
Dan Murrell’s squad is one of six teams taking part in the OMHA round-robin format. The other four teams are Lambeth Lancers, Strathroy Jr. Rockets, Mt. Brydges Cougars and South Huron Sabres.
Against visiting Dorchester on Jan. 29, forwards Graeme Froud and Ben Ewing sparked the Foodland offence with four goals apiece. Froud also earned an assist for a five-point night.
The singles came off the sticks of Dom Marziali, Jaxon Brown, Ben Pearce and Mack Hern. Marziali and Harper Murrell was the playmakers with three assists each.
St. Marys built period leads of 3-0 and 7-0.
The Foodland squad host South Huron Sabres on Monday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. A busy stretch continues when the team plays in Strathroy on Friday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m., then travels to Dorchester on Sunday, Feb. 11 for a 3 o’clock face-off, and hosts Mt. Brydges Monday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m.
Finnbilt Novices split pair
On Monday, Jan. 29 at the PRC, a first-period goal stood up as the winner as the Finnbilt ‘BB’ Novices dropped a 1-0 decision to the Mt. Brydges Cougars.
Both sides took one minor penalty.
Bill Scheuermann’s crew was back in OMHA playoff action the next night in Dorchester and emerged with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Dragons.
Declan McCotter had a pair of goals for the Rock, while the singles went to Kolton McAllister and Charlier Bender. Vaughn Barr earned the net win.
The victory improved the Finnbilt squad’s record to 2-4-1 in the round-robin series. Their other win (3-2) also came against Dorchester, back on Jan. 15 on home ice.
On Monday, Feb. 5, the St. Marys Novices host the Strathroy Jr. Rockets at 7:10 p.m. in its final round-robin game.
