Congratulations to the U16 St. Marys Snipers who upset the heavily favoured Mitchell Stingers with a 5-4 overtime victory in the 34th Annual Mitchell Ringette Tournament this past weekend. After losing to Mitchell in the tournament opener by a 5-1 score, the U16 girls desperately wanted a re-match against their arch rivals. After two convincing wins against Sunderland and Hanover they got their wish, facing off against an undefeated Mitchell team in Sunday’s Gold medal game.
The Snipers came out flying and built an early one goal lead scored by Team Captain Mackayla Hayes. However, Mitchell would respond with two power play goals late in the period to take the lead heading into the final frame. With goaltender Abby Cunningham holding Mitchell’s relentless attacks at bay, St. Marys tied it up thanks to a determined effort by Hayes, who notched her second goal of the game.
Back on their heels, Mitchell ran into some extended penalty trouble which allowed Lilly Smith and Mackayla Hayes (hat trick!) to give the Snipers a 4–2 lead late in the final period. After St. Marys failed to capitalize on back to back 5-on-3’s which should have put the game out of reach, Mitchell roared back with two power play goals of their own to the delight of a raucous hometown crowd.
The overtime period became an end-to-end goaltender’s duel with both Mitchell and St. Marys trading numerous quality chances. But with just over seven minutes left Jill Unich fought off two defenders and fed a no-look pass over to a wide open Shayla Lane who sniped a backhand top shelf over a sprawling Mitchell goalie for the overtime winner and a well-deserved team victory.
