For the second straight year, Stonetown Artisan Cheese took home a first-place ribbon at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Its “Grand Trunk” cheese, aged 18 months, repeated as champion in the Hard Cheese (Parmesan, Gana, Romano etc) category.
The local cheese company also took home ribbons in two other categories. Their “Homecoming” semi-soft cheese, aged three months, placed second in the Surface Ripened (Fontina, Oka, Munster, St Paulin) category. In the Open Class grouping, the Stonetown “White Game Changer” finished in second place.
There were a total of 13 different categories of cheese at the Royal Winter Fair this year. Ten winners came from Ontario, two from Quebec, and one from Alberta.
Stonetown Artisan Cheese is owned by Hans and Jolanda Weber. Ramon Eberle is the company’s expert cheese maker, having moved to Canada from Switzerland three years ago. Their hard work, along with prize-winning results like these at the Royal Winter Fair, are starting to pay off, said Hans. “We’re getting to the point where people are now searching out our cheese. Our customers have also helped us out from a distribution standpoint by recommending to grocery stores that they keep our cheese in stock.”
With Christmas on the way, now is a great time to visit Stonetown Artisan Cheese and buy a gift package and try out their many varieties of hand crafted alpine style cheese. They are located at 5021 Perth Line 8 (Kirkton Road, not far from South Perth Centennial School). For more information, please call 519-229-6856 or visit www.stonetowncheese.com.
