July 1 is approaching and so is the community’s annual Canada Day Celebration! Come celebrate Canada’s 149th birthday on Friday, July 1 in Cadzow Park with a day full of fun, food, swimming, and friends! All the popular features of a community celebration will be in the park – food, musical entertainment and a range of activities and displays. Starting at 11:00 am, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame will be selling hamburgers and hot-dogs, Cindy Taylor of Transvaal Farms will be selling her delicious baked goods and Living Rock Church will be providing freshly popped popcorn.
The official flag-raising and the singing of the National Anthem will take place at 1:00 pm, followed by the distribution of cupcakes from McDonald’s Independent Grocer. The popular free swim in Cadzow Pool, sponsored by Tim Hortons, will be part of the afternoon’s activities following the flag-raising ceremony.
Children’s musician, Paul Droog, will be performing in the park at 11:30 am and 1:10 pm. Long-time Canada Day staple, The Halftones, will perform at 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm. New to the roster of Canada Day performers, Corduroy Gordon will perform at 2:00 pm. Throughout the park there will be a variety of activities for the whole family including a children’s jumping castle, face painting, crafts, carnival games and antique tools and implements with hands-on demonstrations.
Everyone attending the event will have a chance to show their patriotism by participating in the “Colours of Canada” Contest. You can enter the contest by visiting the Colours of Canada registration table prior to 1:00 pm on July 1. Prizes will be awarded to the groups and individuals with the best red and white costumes.
Children and adults may also enter the Canada Day Colouring Contest. Entry forms are available at the St. Marys Public Library and the St. Marys Museum.
