Although the actual event won’t be held for another two years, planning has already begun for the 2020 St. Marys Homecoming celebration.
Beginning July 2, 2020, Homecoming is an opportunity for those who grew up or once lived in St. Marys to return home to their roots and reconnect with family and friends. The festivities will run until July 5, and will likely include such events as a car show, barbeque, a meet and greet at DCVI, and a big get-together at the PRC on the Saturday that will feature drinks, dancing, and live music.
Organizer Wayne Murray says that volunteers for the planning committee are currently needed. He especially hopes to connect with the presidents of the town’s various service clubs to see what help they can offer.
“This is a celebration of St. Marys itself,” he explains. “It’s not just a high school reunion… It involves the whole town.”
Past Homecoming celebrations have usually included a parade, although Murray wonders if the 2020 event and its proximity to Canada Day will preclude such a procession, given the Canada Day Parade will be held just prior.
Homecomings have typically been held once a decade (1990, 2000, 2010,) over the July long weekend.
“It’s a great opportunity for people who have not been here for years to come back and reconnect,” says Murray.
