“A Country Tradition” thrives in Kirkton

By Stewart Grant

An entire weekend of family fun is planned in Kirkton as the community hosts its annual Fall Fair for the 148th consecutive year. The theme, “A Country Tradition”, is about celebrating our rural roots and our Canadian Heritage during our country’s 150th anniversary of confederation.

Kirkton Fair Secretary/Treasurer April Barker is optimistic that with good weather planned for the weekend, the event can continue to build on the positive momentum achieved in recent years. “We’ve really been growing our fair in the past few years, with it running right through from Friday to Sunday. We’re also proud to offer free admission to all kids 12 and under, and we have events for all ages,” said Barker.

The activities begin tonight (Friday) at 6:30 p.m. with a Talent Show at the Main Tent followed by a concert by local classic rock-blues artists “The Jabe Boshart Band”. The Exhibit Hall will also be open with traditional fair displays and exhibits along with a bake sale by the Women’s Institute.

A busy Saturday kicks off with the Parade at 11:00 a.m. followed by Opening Ceremonies at the Main Tent. The rest of the day is filled with tons of family-fun events and demonstrations. 12:30 p.m. will mark the start of 4-H Achievement Day held at the farm pavilion. An entire schedule of events is available for viewing at www.kirkton.ca/kirkton-fair.

The events continue into Sunday, which is highlighted by the Classic Car Show (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) and the ever-popular Demolition Derby held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday morning begins with a Coffee House in the Community Centre from 9:30-11:30 a.m. with a light breakfast, music and social.

With larger communities such as St. Marys and Exeter no longer hosting traditional fairs, it is wonderful to see that fall fairs such as Kirkton’s this weekend and Thorndale’s later this month (September 22-24) are so well organized and attended. Make the short drive to Kirkton this weekend to take in the community spirit and have some family fun.
