Stratford, ON – The Stratford Perth Community Foundation (SPCF) is encouraging citizens of St. Marys to support the St. Marys Smart & Caring Community Fund and to support their local communities while they commemorate Canada 150 and Canada Day this weekend.
In 2015 the Community Foundation initiated their Smart & Caring Communities initiative – in response to the Governor General’s call to Canadians to build a smarter and more caring nation. As a result, Smart & Caring Community Funds are being built by the people and for the people in each of our six local municipalities to support a vibrant, non-profit sector in their own community. Anyone can give any amount to these sustainable funding resources and the donations raised in each community, stay in that community. This initiative truly embodies the “give where you live” philosophy.
Several generous families and individuals have already made contributions to the Smart & Caring Community Fund in their area and the Community Foundation is looking to continue that growth. “The larger the Community Fund, the more we are able to invest back into the respective community,” notes Tracy Van Kalsbeek, Executive Director of the Community Foundation. “These unrestricted community funds allow us to respond to the ever-changing needs and critical priorities of the community. What’s important now will likely change 10, 20 years from now and we want to help ensure that the community has the ability and resources to adapt.”

Recently the Community Foundation announced their 2017 grants. Through endowment, flow-through funds and matching grants like a partnership with CFC’s Community Fund for Canada’s 150 Grant Program, the SPCF has granted a total of $174,668 to important projects and initiatives in Stratford, St. Marys and Perth County – the most the Community Foundation has ever granted annually.
St. Marys organizations who received grants in 2017 included St. Marys Museum, St. Marys Public Library and St. Marys Youth Centre, and so many more within the local area.
