Town of St. Marys replacing Wellington Street Bridge

To be renamed Elizabeth Bridge?

The Town of St. Marys is moving forward with another important infrastructure project. On Monday, June 26, 2017, St.Marys-based McLean Taylor Construction Limited will start the five-month process of replacing the Wellington Street Bridge.

Wellington Street will be closed from the south side of Parkview Drive to the entrance of Nick & Dan’s Collision while the work is being completed. The Riverside Walkway will also be closed between Water Street and Wellington Street during this time. The project is expected to be complete by November 30, 2017.

The project will include the complete removal and reconstruction of the bridge. The Town is undertaking the work to ensure that the structure meets the current and future needs of the residents of St. Marys.

Additional information

The design for the new Wellington Street Bridge was determined through an extensive consultation process that began in 2016. Four design concepts were presented through a public open house and an online survey. The concepts were also vetted through the St. Marys Heritage Committee and the Accessibility Advisory Committee before being approved by Town Council.

The new bridge will feature decoractive street lights that pay homage to the structure’s original design and improve visibility for pedestrian safety. It will also have widened sidewalks to enhance pedestrian comfort and accessibility. In addition, a new watermain will be installed under the bridge deck to improve flow and provide redundancy of the water system serving the North Ward.

Coun. Don Van Galen has a Notice of Motion to be discussed at a future Council meeting that the bridge should be renamed Elizabeth Bridge in honour of Queen Elizabeth II. His motion proposes to make an application to the Office of the Secretary of the Governor General to rename the bridge.
